Brunel International (UK) Ltd – Martin Duncan, Recruitment Manager
Based in Glasgow, Brunel International UK is a provider of permanent and contract engineering and support staff to the UKs leading Oil & Gas, Power and Utilities companies.
Martin Duncan, a recruitment manager with the firm is the fourth senior member of Brunel to attend The Business Map. The current managing director at Brunel International attended the programme a few years previously and gained so much from it that he has used it as a means to provide his senior managers with the key management skills required to drive the business forward and achieve the vision of becoming the No. 1 supplier of specialist technical permanent and contract staff in the UK.
With an MBA already under his belt Martin had questioned the relevance
of going on another management programme that would take up precious
time. He had to justify that there would be sufficient gain “in
actual fact I found the MAP to be more useful than the MBA, it was
much more practical than theoretical and really focused over a short
timescale” In comparison, for Martin the real measure of Tthe
Business Map was that he was able to implement actual changes
and apply the learning in the business “the final stage of the
course (Now make it happen) enabled me to pull everything together
and put in place an action plan, which I am working through now, and
is already showing significant improvements to the business”.
The realisation as to why his MD wanted his senior managers to attend The Business Map quickly became obvious as Martin
progressed through the programme “Along the
way there were at least a dozen 'light bulb' moments, where I was
able to see a clear need to change the way I think and perform. Jim
(his MD) was right, The Business Map is an absolute
must for any business that wants to be serious about looking at what
they do and striving to do things better”
Like so many who attend The Business Map, they find
the power, support and dynamics of their fellow participants to be
such a strong influence on them achieving great things from the programme.
This, for many is what makes The Business Map such
a success. “Probably the most powerful aspect
of The Business Map was the interaction between the
participants. This dynamic enabled a much broader view of each topic,
and allowed me to learn from other people’s mistakes and successes”.
