GLASGOW DIRECTOR WINS KEY BUSINESS AWARD
Glasgow’s
fastest growing Environmental Consultancy, ACS Environmental Services
Ltd, is the latest business to win the prestigious Award for Management
Excellence. Martin Mitchell scooped the coveted award at a recent
dinner in Glasgow’s Corinthian restaurant. Mitchell, Technical
Director at the company’s Glasgow HQ picked up the award on
completion of a management development programme, the business
map, designed to help ambitious business owners and directors
develop their management skills and improve their businesses.
ACS was formed in 1998 with just 3 staff in Glasgow, specialising
in Asbestos Management and Testing and Health & Safety Consultancy.
The company now employs 60 staff in 4 locations across the UK and
has ambitious plans for further development. Mitchell said: "Winning
this fantastic award is the perfect conclusion to what has been a
terrific learning journey. The last 5 months on the business
map has totally transformed how we manage the business. Thinking
back to where we were before the map is quite unnerving.
We had serious problems managing the rapid growth of the business
but we didn’t realise at the time what the problem was. We thought
that the more work we got the better it would be. We were so busy
with the business but we weren’t actually managing it. I firmly
believe the business map rescued us from potential
strategic failure; we must have been so close to breaking point. I’m
sure a lot of growing businesses are so caught up with growing and
generating more business that they don’t recognise and deal
with the really important issues and fail to see the implications
this can have on the business. Managing cash flow; getting marketing
activities right; employing the right people; having the right systems
in place; having a clear strategy – the business map
addressed all of these areas and so much more. The business
map has enabled us to really manage the growth and set firm
foundations for even greater success. The real prize is having a sound
business that we can continue to develop, the Award is pure bonus.
Although I have the award in my hands, I’m sure everyone who
participated in the programme will feel they have been part of something
special. I think we are all winners. If you run a business you should
take a look at the business map. The effect it’s
had on ACS is immeasurable.

In addition to the title, Mitchell received a unique trophy and £3,000
worth of business consultancy and training for his business. The next
business map will take place in Glasgow and starts in October –
